Exodus 15:2 "The Lord is my strength and my song."

Music sooths the soul! (Chuck Swindoll)
Sing because of what He has done for your soul. Sing because of what He is doing in you and in this world. Sing by faith in what He will do that you cannot yet see!   (Nancy Leigh DeMoss)

Psalm 146:2  "I will praise the LORD all of my life; I will sing to the LORD as long as I live."

Music is a powerful gift from God and the greatest vehicle for expressing the depth of all human hearts!

I like this quote that I read:  "When words fail us and our thoughts are too fleeting, music lifts us to a higher plane more than mere words can adequately express.  Music evokes a greater expression of praise, awe, and mystery of God's presence because it affects human emotions.   Emotions connected with music become tools that reinforce the applications of spiritual concepts."

{When lyrics are put to music, they can be learned and memorized easily, so it's a great way to learn God's Word and His principles}

"We can raise our voices and express our innermost beings to God through music---and it is vital to our worship.  Worship is vital to a healthy church, and to our personal relationship with Jesus Christ."  "SING to the LORD!"

Ps. 57:5 "Be exalted above the heavens, O God!"
img_1199.jpg
Psalm 69:34 "Let heaven and earth praise Him, the seas and all that move in them."

"Music is to the ears, what laughter is to the soul!"  Music is one of the best tools for communicating and expressing thoughts!  Christian music especially reminds all human hearts that God is alive and well, making a difference in their daily lives----BECAUSE He lives----and He cares -----and His love is perfect and endless (everlasting)!

Why else should everyone who loves the Lord, sing to Him?
Well, Bob Kauflin (friend of Rev. John Piper) says it well:

"Music is a language of emotion in every culture of every age. It is capable of effecting us in profound and subtle ways (like when Saul's spirit was calmed by David's harp).

Implications:

  • We need a broad emotional range in the songs we sing: reverence, awe, repentance, grief, joy, celebration, etc.
  • We don't need to pit different styles or traditions against one another. They each serve to help us in different ways.
  • Know that there is a difference between being emotional moved and spiritually enlightened. Music has a voice but we're not always sure what that voice is saying. It can make us feel peaceful, but it can't tell us that the Lord is our shepherd or that Jesus endured God's wrath in our place to bring us eternal peace with God.
  • Singing should be an emotional event. And they should be religious affections. God is worthy of our highest, purest, and strongest emotions. Singing helps express and unite them.  Singing without emotion is an oxymoron."

Psalm 66:1-2 "Shout joyfully to the LORD...
img_53100.jpg
all the earth; Sing the glory of His name! Make His praise glorious!

Matthew Henry said, “Singing is as much the language of holy joy as praying is of holy desire.” When you have holy desire, it comes out in prayer. When you have holy joy, it comes out in the language of singing."

"From the rising of the sun to its setting, the name of the LORD is to be praised!"  Psalm 113:3

"That’s the theme of our song. The theme of our holy singing is the salvation of the Lord."  (Nancy Leigh DeMoss)

"How can we know that we’re filled with the Spirit?   As the Bible says in Eph. 5:19-20, says:......Are we singing to the Lord? Are we speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, rehearsing the deliverance of the Lord, rehearsing His goodness and faithfulness, singing to one another, singing to the Lord?"

(taken from Nancy Leigh DeMoss's article entitled:  Singing With A Whole Heart)

         Acts 4:12
"There is salvation in no one else (but Jesus) for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved!"

 Lyrics below to some classic hymns of faith:

"Fairest Lord Jesus"

Fairest Lord Jesus
Fairest Lord Jesus, Ruler of all nature,
O Thou of God

and man the Son,
Thee will I cherish, Thee will I honor,
Thou, my soul's glory, joy and crown.

Fair are the meadows, fairer still the woodlands,
Robed in the blooming garb of spring;
Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer,
Who makes the woeful heart to sing.

Fair is the sunshine, fairer still the moonlight,
And all the twinkling starry host;
Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer
Than all the angels heaven can boast.

Beautiful Savior! Lord of all the nations!
Son of God and Son of Man!
Glory and honor, praise, adoration,
Now and forever more be Thine.

O, For A Thousand Tongues To Sing (David Crowder Band's rendition)

O, for a thousand tongues to sing
My great Redeemer’s praise
The glories of my God and King
The triumphs of His grace

My gracious Master and my God
Assist me to proclaim
To spread through all the earth abroad
The honors of Thy name

So come on and sing out
Let our anthem grow loud
There is one great love Jesus

Jesus, the name that charms our fears
That bids our sorrows cease
‘Tis music in the sinner’s ears
‘Tis life and health and peace

He breaks the power of cancelled sin
He sets the prisoners free
His blood can make the foulest clean
His blood availed for me

He speaks and listening to His voice
New life the dead receive
The mournful broken hearts rejoice
The humble poor believe

Glory to God and praise and love
Be ever, ever giv’n
By saints below and saints above
The church in earth and Heav’n

There are so few words
That never grow old
There are so few words
That never grow old--
Jesus

How Great Thou Art

Oh Lord my God
When I in awesome wonder
Consider all the works
Thy hands have made
I see the stars
I hear the rolling thunder
Thy power throughout
The universe displayed

Then sings my soul
My Saviour, God, to Thee
How great thou art
How great thou art
Then sings my soul
My Saviour, God, to Thee
How great Thou art
How great Thou art

When Christ shall come
With shouts of adulation
And take me home
What joy shall fill my heart
Then I shall bow
In humble adoration
And there proclaim My God
How great Thou art

Then sings my soul
My Saviour, God, to Thee
How great Thou art
How great Thou art
Then sings my soul
My Saviour, God, to Thee
How great Thou art
How great Thou art

How great Thou art
How great Thou art...

Blessed Assurance

 Blessèd assurance, Jesus is mine!
O what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.

This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior, all the day long;
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior, all the day long.

Perfect submission, perfect delight,
Visions of rapture now burst on my sight;
Angels descending bring from above
Echoes of mercy, whispers of love.

This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior, all the day long;
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior, all the day long.

Perfect submission, all is at rest
I in my Savior am happy and blest,
Watching and waiting, looking above,
Filled with His goodness, lost in His love.

This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior, all the day long;
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior, all the day long.

Holy, Holy, Holy

Holy, holy, holy! lord God almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee;
Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty
God in three persons, blessed trinity!

Holy, holy, holy! though the darkness hide thee
Though the eye of sinful man thy glory may not see;
Only thou art holy, there is none beside thee
Perfect in power, love, and purity

Holy, holy, holy! lord God almighty!
All thy works shall praise thy name,
In earth, and sky, and sea;
Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty
God in three persons, blessed trinity!

God in three persons, blessed trinity!

It Is Well With My Soul

When peace like a river attendeth my way
When sorrows like sea billows roll
What ever my lot you have taught me to say
It is well, it is well with my soul

Though the devil will ruin, though trials may come
Let this blessed assurance control
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate
And He shed His own blood for my soul

It is well, with my soul
It is well, it is well with my soul

My sin, oh the bliss of this glorious thought
My sin not in part but the whole
Is nailed to the cross and I bear it no more
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, oh my soul

It is well, with my soul
It is well, it is well with my soul

It is well with my soul
It is well, it is well with my soul

And Lord haste the day when my faith shall be sight
And the clouds be rolled back as a scroll
The trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend
Even so, it is well with my soul

It is well with my soul
It is well, it is well with my soul

It is well with my soul
It is well, it is well with my soul

Great Is Thy Faithfulness

Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father;
There is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not;
As Thou hast been, Thou forever will be.

Refrain

Great is Thy faithfulness!
Great is Thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see.
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided;
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon and stars in their courses above
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

Refrain

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

Refrain

Come Thou Fount

Come, Thou Fount of every blessing,
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
Call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
Sung by flaming tongues above.
Praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it,
Mount of Thy redeeming love.

Here I raise my Ebenezer;
Here by Thy great help I’ve come;
And I hope, by Thy good pleasure,
Safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
Wandering from the fold of God;
He, to rescue me from danger,
Interposed His precious blood.

O to grace how great a debtor
Daily I’m constrained to be!
Let Thy goodness, like a fetter,
Bind my wandering heart to Thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love;
Here’s my heart, O take and seal it,
Seal it for Thy courts above.

O that day when freed from sinning,
I shall see Thy lovely face;
Clothed then in blood washed linen
How I’ll sing Thy sovereign grace;
Come, my Lord, no longer tarry,
Take my ransomed soul away;
Send thine angels now to carry
Me to realms of endless day.
